A team of 21 gymnasts from Tembaletu Special School in Gugulethu took part at the SAGF National Gymnastics Games on Sunday 2 October and walked away with a silver medal for their performance. The team coached by Flairs Sports Academy took part in the National Gym for Life Challenge where they competed against 9 other teams from around the country for the title of National Gym for Life Champions.
The Flairs @ Tembaletu School team was the only team competing in the Challenge with gymnasts with disabilities (both physical and mental) and they completely grabbed the hearts of the audience. The aim of the Gym for Life Challenge is to tell a story or have a theme for your routine, utilising gymnastics apparatus and activities in the performance. The Tembaletu Team used the music “Rock Around the Clock” and had the audience clapping along the entire way as they used colourful hoola hoops and rope skipping to capture the groove of Rock n Roll. There is only one open section, so every team competes against each other, regardless of age or ability. This is the first time the gymnasts from Tembaeltu School have taken part in a National Gymnastics Competition, so to walk away with a silver medal was a fantastic achievement.
Flairs Sports Academy has been teaching gymnastics at the school for the past two years at the school and the gymnasts have come along in leaps and bound. The gymnastics program is headed up by Terrence Tshamlambo and Masixole Felani (both hailing from Khayelitsha) who use their years of experience as top South African Rope Skippers, as well as internationally qualified coaches in Gym for All to give the learners a wonderful activity to take part in week in and week out.
Flairs’s motto is “fun, fitness and friendship” and that gymnastics is for everyone regardless of ability (taking the “dis” out of disability). The gymnasts at Tembaletu School are able to achieve a great deal in the sport, regardless of what challenges they may face.
A program like this is never successful without a fantastic partnership between the school and Flairs Sports Academy. Tembaletu school principle, Mr Pather, has been an inspiring leader in forming the partnership with the Gymnastics club. The group is also supported by Murray & Roberts, Nuclear Packaging and The Ukuphumelela Trust.
The achievement of Tembaletu School in walking away with a silver medal at the National Gymnastics Games is proof that with hard work, dedication and great leadership, you can achieve anything.
FLAIRS SUMMER DISPLAY 2016
No picture can capture the fun, fitness and friendship shared at the Flairs Summer Display which was held at the Wynberg Civic Centre on 12 November 2016. Their assistance helped us to achieve our goal of creating a successful recreational gymnastics platform for kids of all ages and capabilities. The participants had an exciting day performing their skills to the proud spectators with a special demonstration from Jump It Rope Skipping Academy.
BLOMVLEI SUMMER DISPLAY 2016
Blomvlei Primary held their annual Summer Display on November 3rd 2016 and completed their Blue Flairs Rope Skipping Testing. We are proud to say that after three and a half years since the project’s establishment, Blomvlei Primary showed much promise and outstanding skills. The Tembaletu Special School held their annual Winter Display which was also the Provincial Trials for the Gym Games on 30 August 2016. Provincial Trial gymnasts were selected to compete at the National Gym for Life Challenge at the SAGF Gym Games to be held on October 2nd 2016. MASI ATTENDS FIG FOUNDATION COURSE
Masi was one of three specially selected coaches from the Western Cape to attend the International FIG Foundation Coaches Course held in Durban 2016. The course is run by international gymnastics experts every 2 years and specialises in recreational gymnastics skills.
Coach Masi returned home with a greater knowledge and gymnastics skill set which he applies to his classes and the kids are loving it.
FLAIRS WINTER DISPLAY & SPEED CHALLENGE 2016
The Flairs Winter Display & Speed Challenge was held once again at Bergvliet High School. This year the event was sponsored by The Ukuphumelela Trust in partnership with Great White Supply Chain Solutions and Joblaw. The theme of this year’s event was Team South Africa where the participants wore green and gold and actively participated in an item to the song Shoshaloza showing their support for Team South Africa to the upcoming Olympic Games. Flairs is particularly supporting Ryan Patterson (the first male gymnast to qualify for the Olympics since 1956) and the SA Rugby 7s team (Flairs parents and friends are part of the team).
Great fun was had by all at the display where gymnasts from all the classes showed off their skills in an apparatus circuit and a warm up and conditioning dance on the stage. In between the skippers from around the Western Cape took part in the Flairs Speed Challenge to be crowned the Kind and Queen of Speed. This year saw participation by skippers from the Flairs Schools Project at Blomvlei Primary School, as well as The Pebbles Project and Claremont High School. Other participants hailed from Jump It Rope Skipping Academy, GCU and Fish Hoek Gymnastics. Masi and his boys from Jump It Rope Skipping Academy also entertained the crowds during the event.

MASI VOTED AS CHAIR OF ROPE SKIPPING IN CT GYMNASTICS
At the 2016 Cape Town Gymnastics AGM held in May, Masixole Felani was voted in as the Chair of Rope Skipping for the Cape Town District. Well done Masi, and good luck for your term of office in serving and leading the Rope Skippers of the Cape Town District.

The Flairs Summer Display 2015 was held on November 14th at the Methodist Church, Ottery Road. The event was a success, blowing the spectators minds away when the gymnasts took the stage and we are proud to say that all present experienced the fun, fitness and family of Flairs Sports Academy.
